Included within these resources is a lesson, PP booklet students can fill either on -line (or you can print it out for them), key terms sheet and a case list. These resources are for the BTEC National Applied Law course (Pearson 2017 specification). *The lesson materials cover: Unit 4 Family Law: An Introduction * These resources contain a lesson power point along with activities and homework to prepare students for the whole unit of learning. The activities are designed to get students talking about the wider aspects of law. Before, teaching the specific assessment lessons, I wanted my students to have a general introduction lesson which introduced them to family law without the restrictions of assessment criteria. Learning Outcome 3: Understanding Measures Used in Social Control AC3.1: Explain the Role of Agencies in Social Control The lesson power point covers an introduction to the new learning objective along with activities, tasks and research. The Criminology textbooks focus on facts of the social control agencies (which the students can easily read as homework), therefore I have focused the lesson on HOW social control is achieved by these agencies as this is what is required for the exam (if you look at the sample questions and mark schemes). Therefore, I have made it explicit to the students where/how each agency achieves control. I have covered: The CPS/The Police/The Judiciary/Prison Services. I have tasked students to cover the Probation Service and Charities & Pressure groups within their booklet on their own so they are not completely reliant on me during the lesson and to help keep up engagement. I found it useful to cover a little on the Separation of Powers theory first -particularly when it comes to the Judiciary as this really helps students to understand the evaluation points that come later in the unit. Learning Outcome 2: Understanding the Role of Punishment in a Criminal Justice System Assignment Criteria 2.3: Assess How Forms of Punishment Meet the Aims of Punishment The lesson power point covers the four key types of sentence and how the courts try to meet their aims with those punishments. I have included a booklet for students to follow along with, exam questions for this assignment criteria and an activity on the James Bulger case. The Sentecing Council website has some really great videos on how the courts decide their sentences. They are short and sweet but my students found them to be helpful. These resources cover the content needed for Causation in Criminal Law. They can be adapted to any specification (BTEC/A-Level etc). They cover the following lesson objectives: Identify the meaning of the term ‘causation’ in criminal liability Explain the rules of ‘causation’ using supporting cases Apply the rules of ‘causation’ to an exam scenario I have included differentiated activities; there is a stretch and challenge exam question for most able and then a set of mini scenarios for least able.
